What is Grief?

What is grief?

Grief is the normal, natural and inevitable response to loss. Everybody grieves differently. Grief is what you feel and affects all parts of our world, including:

  • The way we think
  • Our physical body
  • Our emotions
  • Our beliefs about the world
  • Social connection
  • Behaviour

For some, grief is expressed through obvious signs of distress and a desire to talk. For others, they may be more private or reluctant to talk and prefer to keep busy. Some people feel their grief more whereas others may think about their grief and what they have lost. Other factors, such as culture, gender, beliefs and health issues can also influence the way someone grieves.
